Travelling West to Sunset Track

Journal Notes

We arrived in the evening sunlight to find the Morning Star windmill making its creaky sound, and the same mallee fowl tracks in the sand around the dam. Pitched the two tents by the same fireplace as last year when I was here with Diccon, and hung the tarp for tomorrow's drawing hidden amongst the Hakeas and Callitris pines. Enough provisions for 3 weeks – with a wine fetching jaunt to Nhill after a week or two.

Writing my diary in the candlelight I can see the still surface of the dam; and beyond I can sense all those miles and miles of dark scrub glittering under a moon charging through the clouds above – over that unpeopled mallee land all the way north to the Murray Sunset country , and north west across the Big Desert Wilderness far into South Australia.
